Portafilter / Espresso Machine
What Is a Portafilter Machine?
A portafilter (or espresso) machine uses a removable handle (the portafilter) that holds a basket of ground coffee. Hot water is forced through the grounds at high pressure to produce espresso. Unlike fully automatic machines, you control every variable — making it both more demanding and more rewarding.
Types of Espresso Machines
Single Boiler
One boiler handles both brewing and steaming. You must wait between pulling shots and frothing milk. Best for beginners on a budget.
Heat Exchanger (HX)
A single boiler kept at steam temperature, with a heat exchange system for brew water. Allows simultaneous brewing and steaming. Popular in the mid-range.
Dual Boiler
Separate boilers for brewing and steaming — independent temperature control and simultaneous operation. The gold standard for home enthusiasts and professionals.
Key Features to Consider
- PID temperature control — precise, adjustable brew temperature
- Pressure gauge — monitor extraction pressure in real time
- 58mm portafilter — industry standard, widest accessory compatibility
- Pre-infusion — gentle water contact before full pressure, improving extraction
- Build quality — brass/stainless steel boilers outlast aluminum
The Grinder Matters More
A common mistake: investing heavily in a machine but skimping on the grinder. The grinder is arguably more important than the machine. A mediocre machine with an excellent grinder will outperform a premium machine with a poor grinder every time. Look for stepless or micro-adjustable grinders designed for espresso.
Recommendation from Röstschmiede
Start with a solid entry-level machine and pair it with the best grinder you can afford. Focus on technique — consistent dosing, distribution, and tamping — before upgrading your machine. The beans and the barista matter more than the equipment.
