AeroPress

What Is the AeroPress?

Invented by Alan Adler in 2005, the AeroPress is a compact, portable brewing device that uses air pressure to push water through coffee grounds. It combines elements of immersion and pressure brewing, offering remarkable versatility in a package that fits in your luggage.

Why It Is So Popular

  • Incredibly versatile — espresso-style to clean filter, one device does it all
  • Fast — total brew time under 2 minutes
  • Portable and durable — lightweight plastic, nearly indestructible
  • Forgiving — harder to make bad coffee than with most methods
  • Easy cleanup — pop out the puck, rinse, done

Standard Method

  1. Dose: 15g coffee, medium-fine grind
  2. Water: 200g at 85-92°C
  3. Place filter in cap, wet it, lock onto chamber
  4. Add coffee and water, stir 10 seconds
  5. Insert plunger, press gently for 20-30 seconds

Inverted Method

A popular alternative that prevents premature dripping:

  1. Flip the AeroPress upside down (plunger at bottom)
  2. Add coffee and water, steep 1-2 minutes
  3. Attach filter cap, flip carefully onto mug
  4. Press

Competition Recipes

The World AeroPress Championship has inspired countless creative recipes — from concentrated, espresso-like shots to delicate, bypass brews. This culture of experimentation is what makes the AeroPress community unique.

Best Coffees for AeroPress

The AeroPress works brilliantly with virtually any coffee. Its adaptability means you can adjust your recipe to suit the bean:

  • Light roasts — use hotter water and finer grind
  • Dark roasts — use cooler water and coarser grind
  • Single origins and blends — both shine

At Röstschmiede, many of our team members use an AeroPress daily. It is one of the most reliable ways to enjoy specialty coffee anywhere.
