Affogato, Espresso Tonic & More

Beyond the Classic Espresso

While a perfectly pulled espresso or a well-crafted flat white will always have their place, the world of coffee drinks extends far beyond the traditional menu. From the Italian affogato to the refreshing espresso tonic, these creative preparations showcase coffee's versatility and its ability to pair with unexpected ingredients.

Affogato

The affogato ("drowned" in Italian) is the simplest and most elegant coffee dessert imaginable:

  • Place one scoop of high-quality vanilla gelato or ice cream in a small glass or bowl
  • Pour one freshly pulled shot of espresso directly over the top
  • Serve immediately and eat with a spoon as the espresso melts through the ice cream

The magic lies in the contrast of temperatures and textures — hot, bitter espresso meeting cold, sweet cream. Use a fruity, medium-roasted espresso for the best balance. Some variations add a splash of amaretto or a sprinkle of cocoa powder.

Espresso Tonic

The espresso tonic has become a modern classic in specialty coffee shops worldwide, and for good reason. The combination is surprisingly harmonious:

  1. Fill a tall glass with ice cubes (the more, the better)
  2. Pour in 150-180ml premium tonic water
  3. Slowly pour one double shot of espresso over the back of a spoon to create a layered effect
  4. Optional: add a slice of orange or a sprig of rosemary for garnish

The quinine bitterness of the tonic complements the coffee's natural bitterness, while the carbonation lifts and brightens the flavors. Use a light-to-medium roast with fruity acidity for the best result. A citrusy Ethiopian or floral Kenyan espresso works beautifully.

Cold Brew Lemonade

A summer favorite that sounds unusual but tastes incredible:

  • Mix equal parts cold brew concentrate and fresh lemonade
  • Serve over ice with a lemon wheel garnish
  • The acidity of the lemon harmonizes with the coffee's natural fruit notes

Shakerato

An Italian iced coffee that is shaken, not stirred:

  • Combine a double espresso with ice and a teaspoon of sugar in a cocktail shaker
  • Shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds
  • Strain into a chilled martini glass
  • The result is a frothy, cold, perfectly sweetened espresso — pure elegance

Bumble Coffee

A visually stunning layered drink:

  • Pour 2-3 tablespoons of honey into the bottom of a glass
  • Add ice cubes
  • Pour cold orange juice over the ice
  • Slowly add a double shot of espresso on top
  • The layers create a beautiful gradient from golden honey through orange to dark coffee

Tips for Creative Coffee Drinks

  • Quality matters more than ever — simple recipes have nowhere to hide poor ingredients
  • Temperature contrast is your friend — hot espresso on cold ingredients creates drama and flavor
  • Match roast profiles to the drink: light and fruity for tonics and citrus, medium and chocolatey for dessert drinks
  • Fresh espresso only — these drinks rely on the vibrancy of just-pulled shots

At Röstschmiede, we love these creative preparations because they introduce specialty coffee to people who might not yet appreciate a straight espresso. They are gateways to a deeper coffee journey.
