Home Barista Beginner Guide
Your start into the coffee world at home
Getting Started
Want to make really good coffee at home? Here's your starter guide - no jargon, with concrete recommendations.
The Three Most Important Investments
- Good beans - freshly roasted, from a roastery (not from the supermarket)
- A good grinder - more important than the machine! Freshly ground makes the biggest difference
- A brewing method - start with whatever appeals to you
Starting with Filter
For beginners, we recommend a pour-over dripper (V60 or Melitta). Affordable, forgiving of mistakes, and makes excellent coffee.
Starting with Espresso
Espresso at home is more demanding and expensive. You need a portafilter machine and a good espresso grinder. Budget: from 500 euros for both.
Essential Rules
- Grind fresh - always right before brewing
- Right water temperature - 92-96°C (not boiling!)
- Ratio - approx. 60g coffee per liter of water (filter)
- Good water - filtered, not too hard, not too soft
