Coffee from Papua New Guinea
Wild-growing coffee from the highlands
Papua New Guinea - The Undiscovered Jewel
Papua New Guinea (PNG) is one of the last great secrets of the coffee world. In the rugged highlands, coffee often grows semi-wild in traditional "coffee gardens" among banana palms and shade trees.
Eastern Highlands
The Goroka and Kainantu regions in the Eastern Highlands at 1,400-1,900 meters produce the country's finest coffees. Typica and Bourbon varieties dominate here.
Flavor Profile
- Sweet and fruity with tropical character
- Brown sugar and papaya
- Medium body with clean cup
- Mild acidity – accessible yet complex
Challenges
The greatest challenge is infrastructure: No roads, steep mountain slopes, and thousands of smallholders make logistics extremely difficult. Nevertheless, more cooperatives are succeeding in bringing outstanding lots to the world market.
